Frequently Asked Questions

Do you teach complete beginners?

Of course, beginners are always welcome! I am very experienced with teaching students who have never picked up a guitar before, ensuring the lessons go at a pace that suits them. You won't be a beginner for long here at Guitar Lessons Hull.

Where do you hold lessons?

I teach the majority of my lessons at the pupil’s homes. I find this helps them to learn the guitar even faster as they are in the comfort of their own home and in that familiar environment. Alternatively, if this is not ideal we can look to hire a neutral place in an easily accessible location.

Do you teach electric or acoustic guitar?

I teach both, and have a wide knowledge of both styles.

Do you teach children?

Yes, I teach a lot of young people under 16 and would be more than happy to teach your children as well. I find that children younger than 12 love to learn through exciting and engaging lessons covering fun pop song that they can recognise. With students who are slighly older being really passionate about learning the bands that they love! Whatever your age I have the lessons to help you reach you aims on the guitar.

What hours do you teach?

During the week most lessons tend to be on an evening (due to people having work commitments etc) and I teach up until the latest of 8pm on these days. During the weekends the hours I teach are much more flexible and I usually teach from around 10am – 9pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

How long is each session?

The length of a session is entirely up to you. Some people have half an hour sessions and others have two hours sessions. I find that the more lessons and hours you put in the faster you will progress.

How old do you have to be to start playing guitar?

There is no age limit! You can start at 5 years old or you can start at 55 years old, it is never too late to learn. I do find that children below the age of around 7/8 years old do tend to find it a little more difficult, but that doesn’t mean to say they can’t do it!

Do I need my own guitar to learn?

No you do not need to have your own guitar I can provide you with one to use! However, it is advised that you do have your own so that you grow familiar with playing that particular instrument and you are able to practice in between lessons.

What type of guitar do you teach?

I teach both acoustic and electric guitar and teach all varieties of styles I.E Pop, Punk, Rock, Blues, Jazz etc.

How often should I take lessons?

I would advise a minimum of one lesson a week in order to ensure consistent progress, but some people have one every two weeks and others have 2 – 3 lessons per week, it’s completely up to you!

How many lessons will I need to be able to play?

This varies from person to person but you tend to find that within 5 - 10 lessons or so you will be at a stage where you will be able to name and play most major/minor chords and have the ability to adapt this skill to go on to playing some of your favourite classics!

What would happen if I miss a lesson?

That’s absolutely not a problem. Just let me know within a 48 hour period before the lesson and we can rearrange to another time that best suits you! Guitar Lessons Hull does have a 48 hour cancellation policy which does mean that if you cancel your lesson within this time you will still be charged the full price.
